The holly like leaves are produced in racemes and are evergreen, providing structure all year round. Happy to grow in the shade, mahonias are also excellent for wildlife as they don't just provide nectar during the winter months when its a little scarce but the ornamental purple berries which follow the flowers are also attractive to birds.
