Edible hazel nuts which can also be medicinal are the end result of Corylus avellana 'Red Majestic,' an upright, medium sized shrub. It has twisted branches bearing heart shaped, wrinkled toothed leaves which are bright red purple in spring turning red flushed, green in summer. The bare stems in winter produce purple red catkins on bare stems which are followed by red nuts the following autumn. To get the most hazel nuts in any year it is best to plant in moist, free draining alkaline soil in full sun or partial shade and grow as a bush.
