Clethra barbinervis Japanese clethra is a large, bushy, tough, hardy, deciduous, medium sized shrub with obovate leaves that are about 12cm in length and turns red and orange in autumn. It also produces small fragrant flowers in racemes in late summer and autumn which attracts butterflies and other insects. One of the more interesting things about this plant is its attractive bark. Its richly coloured stems slowly peel off and reveals lavender, grey and cream bark. RHS Award of Garden Merit winner. Flowers July September. Supplied in a 3 litre pot.
